CHAPTER 17

Jake didn’t like this. Something smelt rotten, and he sensed that he was the only one willing to rummage through the bin to find it. The alarm bells of previous experience, a unique skill set he’d honed during his time at CID, were beginning to ring. Loudly. And throughout his entire body.

Something was amiss.

It all seemed too easy. Andri Gunnarsson had simply fallen into their laps, with his arms behind his back, begging to be cuffed and taken into custody.

It was wrong, and there were so many things that concerned him.

‘Another coffee?’ Tyler asked as he approached Jake at his desk.

Jake looked up at him. ‘You know what? I think I will. I definitely need some more caffeine in me right now.’

‘Why’s that?’

Before responding, Jake surveyed the rest of Room 1430, twisting his head from side to side. Satisfied no one was watching or listening, he leant forward, pulling Tyler down to his level. ‘Doesn’t it seem odd to you that Gunnarsson miraculously stumbled into our path and is now going to spend the rest of his life in jail?’

Tyler looked at him blankly. ‘That’s generally what tends to happen to criminals.’

Jake sighed. ‘That’s not what I meant. What evidence do we have against him?’

‘Forums. Bank transfers. Threats and promises he was going to do something like shoot a member of the Royal Family in the head.’

Jake admitted that the evidence was profound enough, but it wasn’t enough for him. He knew how easily information and evidence could be altered, doctored, manufactured…

‘What about an alibi?’ Jake asked. ‘The man works in a shop. A busy shop. So how would he have been able to control the drone to kill Alice Pridden while serving his customers?’

Before he allowed Tyler a chance to respond, Jake swivelled in his chair and loaded the CCTV footage from inside AG Souvenirs that one of the team had managed to source. He scrolled back to the precise time of 13:32:32 – minutes before the Duchess of Essex was assassinated.

On the screen, Andri Gunnarsson was serving behind his cash register. The queue of people was short, and, in fact, the rest of the shop was particularly sparse, save for a few idle shoppers browsing a spinning rack at the front of the store. Jake made a mental note of the time stamp: 13:33:19. The Duke and Duchess had just started to exit the chapel, arms locked together.

Andri finished serving a customer, waved them goodbye and stood there a moment, observing the shop. A second later, he bent down behind the counter, removed a mobile phone and disappeared. Jake watched him move on the multitude of cameras inside the premises, his gaze following Andri as he hopped up a small step and into another section of the shop.

And then he disappeared in a blind spot between two of the cameras.

The cheeky bastard, Jake thought.

‘Explain that one then, mate,’ Tyler said, slapping him on the back heartily. ‘I know you like to think that not everyone – even those you least expect – is guilty, but we can’t always have it that way.
